Project 3 - India

Info

Children In Need India (CINI) was started 47 years ago by Dr Samir Chaudhuri, a paediatrician who lived through famines and drought in the bay of Bengal. As a result of seeing the catastrophic effect of lack of nutrition and clean water for children he started CINI, focusing on proper healthcare and nutrition for women and children in poor communities.

We fully fund the community-based Children's Learning Centre at the Sukna Tea Estate (Matigara Block Darjeeling). The aim is to provide quality educational support to children aged six to fourteen years. It is run by qualified staff from CINI and creates a safe and supportive space for children to learn whilst also raising awareness about early marriage, child trafficking, children's rights and various adolescent issues. It works with children, parents and local authorities. Thirty-six children regularly attend the Learning Centre and fifteen adolescents take part in ongoing sessions and activities.

Getting to school from the tea garden is difficult and costly so a recent initiative is the introduction of a dedicated vehicle to get those children to their school, funded by Street Tea.

This project is only possible to fund because of our Street Tea customers so again, we thank you.
